Runner's Den

Jordan Bierema

Last week the Canadian Cross Country Championships took place in Kingston at Fort Henry. This was the last year that it will be held there as it has been for the past 4 years. This year’s race did not disappoint! There were a number of Hamilton Runners in the results this year, mostly coming from the Dundas Valley Track Club and Harbour Track. Below is a recap from Coach Patrick Mackinnon who leads the Dundas Valley Track Club:

“The day started with the community 5K. With snow and ice on the course, Eric Barry took the overall win in comfortable fashion; the only critique to be made of his performance was the rather underwhelming celebration. Ryan Tice was just behind in a strong 4th andJeremy Walsh in 9th to put three Wild Turkeys in the top 10. Canadian Army call-up Daniel Barry stole the hearts of every girl watching.

Next up was the Masters 8K. Despite a brutal wind battering them throughout the race, Paul Felix and Jose Fuentes moved steadily up through the field. Jose was coming off the Buffalo Turkey Trot two days before, but somehow he managed to still show up in Kingston and finish 20th overall. Paul was right behind in 29th. Mary Ross, our lone masters female, also had a great run, finishing 6th overall!

Victoria Coates was once again our lone representative in the senior women's race, racing smart to finish 6th overall on a course that had turned into a mud bath by the afternoon.

Attempting to better their performance that shocked the nation a a year earlier, the senior men's team of Daniel Fournier, Kyle Rooke, Grant Wignall and myself survived some slips, falls, and seizing muscles to finish 11th in the country as a team.

Special shoutouts go to our spectators on the course who made us sound like a way bigger club than we actually are!”

That sounds like a great day! Congrats to everyone who competed and spectated!

Now that the Fall races are in the past, we look forward to the Winter and early Spring races that will keep all of us getting out the door as the weather gets even colder and darker! (That sounds a bit depressing). Below are a number of runs and races that are happening in the Hamilton area in the coming months.
