CANADIAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS #ACXC

Last week the Canadian Cross Country Championships took place in Kingston at Fort Henry. This was the last year that it will be held there as it has been for the past 4 years. This year’s race did not disappoint! There were a number of Hamilton Runners in the results this year, mostly coming from the Dundas Valley Track Club and Harbour Track. Below is a recap from Coach Patrick Mackinnon who leads the Dundas Valley Track Club:

“The day started with the community 5K. With snow and ice on the course, Eric Barry took the overall win in comfortable fashion; the only critique to be made of his performance was the rather underwhelming celebration. Ryan Tice was just behind in a strong 4th andJeremy Walsh in 9th to put three Wild Turkeys in the top 10. Canadian Army call-up Daniel Barry stole the hearts of every girl watching.

Next up was the Masters 8K. Despite a brutal wind battering them throughout the race, Paul Felix and Jose Fuentes moved steadily up through the field. Jose was coming off the Buffalo Turkey Trot two days before, but somehow he managed to still show up in Kingston and finish 20th overall. Paul was right behind in 29th. Mary Ross, our lone masters female, also had a great run, finishing 6th overall!

Victoria Coates was once again our lone representative in the senior women's race, racing smart to finish 6th overall on a course that had turned into a mud bath by the afternoon.

Attempting to better their performance that shocked the nation a a year earlier, the senior men's team of Daniel Fournier, Kyle Rooke, Grant Wignall and myself survived some slips, falls, and seizing muscles to finish 11th in the country as a team.

Special shoutouts go to our spectators on the course who made us sound like a way bigger club than we actually are!”

That sounds like a great day! Congrats to everyone who competed and spectated!

RACES

Now that the Fall races are in the past, we look forward to the Winter and early Spring races that will keep all of us getting out the door as the weather gets even colder and darker! (That sounds a bit depressing). Below are a number of runs and races that are happening in the Hamilton area in the coming months.

HAMILTON ROAD2HOPE MARATHON

It’s taken a bit over a week for things to settle down from the weekend! What a success.

First off, thank you. Thank you to everyone involved, from the runners and spectators, to the medical team and volunteers, charity partners, and race coordinators. Without the amazing people surrounding this event it just couldn't be done.

This time of year the weather can be unpredictable, however we had two beautiful days, especially for our Sunday runners. Hamilton was definitely showing off its fall colours!

If you have photos from the race weekend, or maybe a story of your own to share, we would love to see and hear them! Please send them to jordan@runnersden.com!

Jordan Bierema

The fall season has officially begun! The weather is starting to become more enjoyable for running with those perfect temperatures and soon we’ll have those beautiful tree colours on the trails. It’s also exciting for myself, Jordan Bierema, as I step into a new role as Manager of the Runner’s Den. After a few years working in University Administration, I decided to put that on hold (for forever) and follow my passion, running. For those of you that don’t know me, below is a snippet of my running history.

  • Started running when I was in Grade 3… just a few years ago.

  • Gave up running in grade 9 as I thought it wasn’t a “cool enough” sport.

  • Got back into competitive running in grade 10… realized it was actually kind of cool.

  • Ran cross country and track with the McMaster Marauders for 4 years.

  • Started training for road races following University.

  • Gave that up shortly after and started to run ultramarathons on the trails… I recently completed a 100km race in the Alps.

  • Looking forward to an exciting racing schedule in 2019!

Make sure you swing by the store and say hi! I’d love to meet you. If you want to contact me, Email Jordan@runnersden.com or Call (905) 490-8038.

Running groups are popping up all over the place, including the Hamilton Running Club. Lowercity Runners, Dundas Valley Track Club, and many more. If you’re wanting to run with a group, there is bound to be one that fits into your schedule!

Not only are there many groups with a whole range of times & places to meet, but runners of all abilities have a space to feel comfortable, encouraged, and accepted. Whether you are just starting to run, not interested in racing and just love to get out on the trails, are very competitive, or looking to be the fastest runner in Hamilton, there is a place for you.
